Our story
Why we built Webscout
Webscout is a team of former government analysts and intelligence operators with decades of combined experience building network visibility at national scale.
In the physical world, wars are won on logistics. In cyberspace, visibility is king. Every digital threat starts with a connection, and the ability to see, detect and respond to it is what separates those who hold the advantage from those who don’t.
Today, Webscout solves the hardest network visibility problems for the most critical entities. Our mission is to equip our partners with visibility solutions that let them regain the cyber advantage.
One attack, two viewsExample
01Traditional visibility
No visibility upstream
- 203.0.113.24 (unknown)
- 198.51.100.212 (unknown)
- 192.0.2.77 (unknown)
Government organisation
Incoming connections from seemingly unrelated IP addresses, with little context about who is behind them or how the traffic reached the network.
02Visibility with WebscoutWebscout vantage point
- Actor
- Proxy entry (a Webscout vantage point)
- Proxy exit (a Webscout vantage point)
- Tor entry (a Webscout vantage point)
- Tor middle node (a Webscout vantage point)
- Tor exit node (a Webscout vantage point)
- Government organisation
One unexplained IP address becomes a route back to the actor.
The connection from 203.0.113.24, in context
The actor at 192.0.2.140 sent traffic through a residential proxy, which relayed it from the household address 198.51.100.73 into Tor. It left through the exit node 203.0.113.24, the address in the government organisation’s logs. Webscout’s vantage points link each hop to the next, back to the actor.
Illustrative only. Webscout does not claim visibility across entire covert networks, only select nodes within them. Tracing a connection back to its origin, as shown here, is therefore theoretical.
